Luo Wei didn't immediately grasp what was said and remained silent for a few seconds before averting her gaze slightly. "Mr. Mo, although I don't know who the father of the child is, there's no need for you to take on the responsibility yourself."
Her voice was heavy with melancholy as she lowered her head. "But still, thank you, Mr. Mo."
Mo Huai let out a cold scoff, his gaze unwavering. "That night, it was me. The child is my own flesh and blood, and I have the right to decide the child's future."
Luo Wei could see the determination in his eyes. Could it really have been him that night? The coincidence was too uncanny. A flicker of surprise flashed in her eyes.
"Mr. Mo, was it really you?" Luo Wei's mouth fell open in disbelief as she realized that Mr. Mo was the mysterious man from that night.
As she recalled that night, her cheeks flushed a deep red, and her face grew hot.
"Yes." Mo Huai looked at her and nodded firmly.
Luo Wei was stunned, the reality was hard to predict. After all, their encounter was born out of a misunderstanding that resulted in the creation of a new life. But a misunderstanding was just that—a misunderstanding. They had only met twice since then, with no real emotional connection between them. How could they provide a complete family for the child?
She worried about raising a child without a father's love, fearing that her child would grow up as she did—in a loveless environment, developing an insecure and timid personality. She didn't expect Mr. Mo to marry her; she only hoped to save enough money to buy a small house of her own and live an ordinary life.
After revealing the secret, Mo Huai felt a weight lifted from his heart. In business, he was decisive and ruthless, his demeanor cold. Despite countless socialites in Nanjing throwing themselves at him, Mo Huai had always rejected them all, with his parents respecting his wishes.
Though his parents supported his freedom to choose, they couldn't help but worry as Mo Huai remained single at 28, having never been in a relationship. They even speculated about his sexual orientation, though they never dared to ask him directly, fearing the answer might be that he preferred men. That would mean the Mo family line would end, and they'd rather not know.
Mo Huai noticed his mother's subtle attempts to pry into his personal life, always asking if there was a girl he liked. But he remained silent, never answering these questions.
He wondered how they would feel if they knew they were about to become grandparents—excited or shocked?
Suddenly, Luo Wei's phone rang, breaking the silence. She answered it quickly.
"Wei wei, how are you feeling? Are you better?" Su Yuxin's concerned voice came from the other end. She had just finished walking her dog and finally had time to call.
"The doctor said I'm fine. I just need a few days of rest." Luo Wei wasn't ready to share her secret with her friends, fearing it would worry them.
"That's good. Take a few more days to rest at home. I've got the shop covered, so don't worry." Su Yuxin offered some final words of advice before hanging up.
Staring at her phone screen, Luo Wei felt a tear well up in the corner of her eye, but she quickly brushed it away. She didn't want to cry in front of any man, reminding herself to stay strong.
Mo Huai stood by her side, patiently waiting for her to finish the call, showing no sign of impatience.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Luo Wei apologized, "I'm sorry for causing you trouble."
"I've noticed you apologize a lot," Mo Huai said, his deep eyes locking onto hers, his brow slightly raised.
His words left Luo Wei flustered and at a loss for what to say. She simply didn't like being a burden to others.
After hesitating for a long time without finding the right words, Mo Huai's gentle voice broke the silence. "You don't need to apologize to me anymore. You don't owe me anything."
"Oh." Luo Wei's lips curved slightly as she nodded in response.
Seeing her agreement, Mo Huai's expression softened slightly. Her constant apologies made their relationship feel distant, like that of strangers, and he didn't like that.
Luo Wei and Mo Huai took the elevator out of the hospital and headed to the underground parking garage. She walked in small steps behind him, her mind racing. Where were they going? What would happen to the child inside her? Did he want to keep the baby? Or...was he planning on getting rid of it? These thoughts swirled in Luo Wei's mind.
Mo Huai got into the driver's seat and fastened his seatbelt. Noticing that Luo Wei hadn't gotten into the car, he pressed his lips tightly together and ordered, "Get in."
At his command, Luo Wei hesitantly got into the passenger seat, moving cautiously.
She sat with her small hands tightly clenched on her lap, stealing glances at the man driving beside her. His face was expressionless.
"Where are we going?" Luo Wei asked quietly, turning to look at Mo Huai.
"To the hospital," Mo Huai replied curtly.
Luo Wei's ears buzzed as if she'd been pricked by a needle. Her whole body felt numb.
So, they were going to the hospital for an abortion after all. She shouldn't have let herself hope. Without hope, there would be no disappointment.
"Okay," she replied, her face downcast.
Mo Huai picked up his phone and scrolled to Gu Xiu's number, pressing the call button.
Meanwhile, on the other side...
Gu Xiu was enjoying a rare day off, swimming with friends. His greatest passions were swimming, sports, and, of course, eating, drinking, and having fun.
He had just finished a lap and was about to take a break when his phone, sitting on the table, rang. Glancing at the screen, he saw it was Mo Huai calling. He cursed under his breath, "Not again, it's him."
Whenever he had a day off, Mo Huai always seemed to interrupt. Whether it was to attend a banquet, visit a sick cousin, or simply because he was bored, Mo Huai always found a reason to call.
Gu Xiu didn't hesitate to decline the call, planning to ignore it and swim another lap.
But then, the phone rang again, its pleasant ringtone filling the air.
Irritated, Gu Xiu reluctantly picked up the phone and answered. "Bro, I'm on vacation today. What is it now?" His tone was exasperated, his face turning cold.
"I know," Mo Huai's calm voice came through the receiver.
Gu Xiu's mouth twitched involuntarily, feeling like a flock of crows was flying over his head.
"You know, but you still called. What's your deal? Every time I have a day off, you find a way to mess it up. What do you want?"
"Come to Gu Family Hospital, it's urgent." Mo Huai's voice was firm as he ended the call without giving Gu Xiu a chance to refuse.
Gu Xiu stared at the phone for a few seconds, taking a deep breath and muttering a few curses under his breath, "What did I do to deserve this?"
He knew Mo Huai's personality well. He wouldn't use the word "urgent" unless it was truly an emergency. Whatever it was, it had to be serious if it warranted ruining his day off.
Curious to see what was so urgent, Gu Xiu quickly cleaned up, changed into a casual outfit, and grabbed his bag before heading out.
As he stepped out, Gu Xiu, who was warm and radiant like jade, was still dripping with water. His short hair gave off the fresh scent of lemon water, and his lips had a perfect curve, as if they always held a smile.
After saying goodbye to his friends, Gu Xiu drove straight to Gu Family Hospital.
