Luo Wei struggled to suppress the turmoil in her stomach, collapsing weakly onto the ground.
“Ugh—” Luo Wei clung to the toilet, vomiting once more, her face as pale as a puppet with its strings cut.
What was happening to her? She had been experiencing persistent nausea and loss of appetite recently. Could she have contracted a terminal illness?
The thought caused her heart to sink. Was her youth about to end at the age of 23?
“No, no, bad thoughts come true more often than good ones,” Luo Wei shook her head vigorously, trying to banish such ideas from her mind.
Could it be... pregnancy?
That was impossible. She had taken birth control right after that night. How could she be pregnant? The idea made Luo Wei laugh and cry at the same time.
“Wei Wei, what’s wrong? You don’t look well,” Su Yuxin asked with concern as she heard noises from the bathroom, setting aside her tasks to check on her friend.
Luo Wei stood up, steadied herself, and forced a smile. “I’m fine.”
“Stop being stubborn. I’m taking you to the hospital,” Su Yuxin insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument.
“I can go by myself. I’ll take care of it,” Luo Wei replied firmly. It was the busiest time in the shop, and any absence would surely lead to customer complaints. She didn’t want to tarnish the shop’s reputation, so she turned to Su Yuxin with a reassuring smile and nodded resolutely, “I’ll go alone.”
Su Yuxin sighed, feeling a lump in her throat, and reminded Luo Wei to take care of herself.
Luo Wei left the bathroom, removed her apron, said goodbye to Su Yuxin, and walked out of the shop, Gou Bu Li Mao (The Dog Ignores the Cat). As she stepped outside and turned the corner, her face reverted to its pale, bloodless state.
After walking about three hundred meters to the bus stop, Luo Wei, her steps unsteady, arrived at the bus shelter. It was only five stops to the hospital, not far, and taking a taxi was too expensive. Since leaving the Luo family, she had been saving up to buy a small place of her own. Saving money was her top priority—every little bit counted.
Luo Wei curled up on the bench, waiting for the bus.
Mo Huai had just finished attending a business banquet and was preparing to drive back to the Mo Corporation. Today, there was an important contract that, if successfully signed, could bring an additional billion yuan in profits to the company.
With one hand on the steering wheel, he drove lazily, the hum of the engine rising and falling like the continuous roar of a dragon. As he drove, he glanced casually in the rearview mirror, and with just one look, he recognized her. His pupils contracted sharply, and he slammed on the brakes, his eagle-like eyes fixed on the mirror.
He saw a girl hunched over, looking as if she was in extreme discomfort, her face as white as a sheet.
Without hesitation, Mo Huai reversed the car, stopping in front of the girl.
“Beep, beep—” Mo Huai’s long fingers pressed the horn, drawing Luo Wei’s attention. She slowly lifted her head.
A Maybach was parked in front of her, its window rolling down slowly.
Mo Huai leaned out, his expression a mix of charm and mischief, his deep voice resonating, “Are you alright?”
Luo Wei was momentarily stunned, taking a few seconds to recognize him as Gu Chuyi’s friend—Mo Huai.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, she maintained her politeness and replied, “I’m fine, thank you.”
Suddenly, the car door opened, and Mo Huai stepped out, walking toward her. Only then did he clearly see her face, deathly pale and contorted with pain.
“Get in,” he ordered.
“Where to?” Luo Wei asked.
“The hospital,” Mo Huai replied.
Luo Wei quickly refused, feeling it was inappropriate to trouble someone she had only met once. “No need, I can go by myself. I don’t want to disrupt your work.”
“Get in,” Mo Huai repeated, his tone brooking no argument as he circled back to the driver’s seat.
After a moment of silence, Luo Wei opened the door and got into the passenger seat, thinking to herself how strange this man was.
Seeing Luo Wei obediently enter the car, a faint smile crossed Mo Huai’s face, one even he didn’t notice.
He took out his phone, navigated to the nearest hospital, and restarted the Maybach.
As the car moved slowly forward, the confined space was filled with the powerful aura emanating from the man, creating a tense atmosphere.
Luo Wei fidgeted with her fingers, silently wishing they would reach the hospital quickly, fearing the awkwardness might overwhelm her before they even arrived.
“Ring—”
The sound of a phone ringing broke the uncomfortable silence. Mo Huai touched his Bluetooth earpiece and spoke with a commanding tone, “Speak.”
Luo Wei’s curiosity was piqued by Mo Huai’s conversation, so she listened in.
After a few moments, the call ended with Mo Huai saying, “Cancel it, I have something more important to attend to.”
Luo Wei then realized that he was supposed to sign a contract but had canceled the meeting to take her to the hospital.
She wondered why he would prioritize taking a near-stranger to the hospital over making money. Most people would think making money was more important, wouldn’t they?
Luo Wei mulled it over and then turned to Mo Huai. “I can really go on my own...” She hesitated, feeling bad about making him miss out on earning money. “You can drop me off here. Why would you miss out on such a big deal?”
Her weak and gentle voice sounded particularly pitiful to Mo Huai, stirring a sense of protectiveness in him.
“We’re almost there,” Mo Huai replied calmly.
Luo Wei, at a loss for words, no longer refused his kindness and sat quietly.
On the other side of town, Xu Kaifeng stared in disbelief at his phone after the boss had hung up on him.
"Something more important? What could be more important than making ten billion?" Xu Kaifeng scratched his head in frustration. He had worked tirelessly for the past two months, putting together this proposal.
Even if he didn’t get credit, he had certainly put in the effort. Yet, with one word from the big boss, all his hard work had gone to waste. Xu Kaifeng's face twitched in frustration. Ten billion might not be a big deal for Mo Corporation, but he still thought it was foolish not to earn the money.
Of course, he wouldn’t dare express these thoughts out loud. After graduating, he had started as an intern at Mo Corporation. Despite many companies trying to recruit him, he had turned them all down because Mo Huai paid him too well.
Within two years of graduating, he had managed to buy a house in the most prosperous area of Nanjing with his own money.
Steeling himself, Xu Kaifeng returned to the meeting room and, with a polite smile, said, “Mr. Li, I’m terribly sorry, but Mr. Mo had a minor traffic accident and won’t be able to sign the contract today. Would it be convenient for you to reschedule?”
Upon hearing this, the man stood up in concern, “Is Mr. Mo alright? How did he get into a car accident? I must go see him.”
Xu Kaifeng quickly intercepted him, his tone calm, “It’s nothing serious, just a minor injury. He’s already gone home to rest. Mr. Mo sends his sincerest apologies for the inconvenience.”
“Alright, as long as he’s okay. We can discuss the contract another time. I’ll take my leave for now.”
Xu Kaifeng escorted Mr. Li out the door and, once he was out of sight, breathed a sigh of relief.
If Mo Huai found out he used this excuse, would he get fired?
He still needed to save money to get married!
