 "What's going on?"

"What happened?"

"What was that noise just now?!"

The sound of hurried footsteps approached as people began emerging from the rear quarters. Many of the women had their hair down, wrapped only in cloaks, while the male guests were no better dressed.

Holding lanterns aloft, the crowd gathered outside. When they heard the commotion had come from the direction of the small prayer hall, they assumed something had happened there. The bolder ones, accompanied by their guards and maidservants, rushed over. By the time they reached the prayer hall, they found a monk already standing outside, his expression grim.

"Venerable Master, what happened?" someone called out.

The monk's face was ashen. "It's nothing. Someone accidentally knocked something over and startled everyone."

"How could knocking something over cause such a scream?" Princess Ji had been irritable all night and had only just fallen asleep when she was jolted awake, putting her in an especially foul mood.

The monk pressed his lips together, blocking the entrance to the prayer hall. "This humble monk was startled and disturbed you all. Please forgive me. The night is late—everyone should return to rest..."

Bang!

Before he could finish, a muffled thud came from inside the prayer hall, followed by indistinct sounds.

The crowd outside immediately sensed something was wrong. Seeing the monk's expression grow even darker, Princess Leyang pushed her way forward. "You're lying, monk! What are you hiding in there?"

"This humble monk isn't hiding anything..."

"If you're not hiding anything, then step aside!"

"Esteemed patrons—"

The monk raised a hand to stop them, but at that moment, the unmistakable sounds of passionate lovemaking spilled from the prayer hall—gasps, moans, and the trembling, tearful cries of a woman lost in ecstasy.

The faces of those outside twisted in shock. Married women hurriedly covered the ears of the unmarried girls beside them, while the male guests stood frozen in disbelief.

This—

This was—!

Princess Leyang's eyes gleamed with excitement, though she feigned outrage. She slapped the monk hard across the face. "How dare you! In a sacred temple, someone dares to engage in such depravity?! I want to see who has the audacity to behave so shamelessly! Break down this door!"

"Princess!"

The monk panicked, abandoning formalities. He had already sent a fellow monk to fetch the abbot, but alone, he was no match for the guards Princess Leyang had brought.

He was shoved aside, and the prayer hall doors were slammed open. Princess Leyang strode inside, taking in the dimly lit scene: two figures entwined on the floor, lost in their passion. She raised her voice in righteous fury.

"So it's you, Song Tangning! I knew you were shameless—"

"Princess!"

A cold voice cut through the air. Tangning stepped forward, her expression icy, accompanied by several monks—completely unharmed.

Princess Leyang whirled around, her tirade dying in her throat.

Impossible!

How was Song Tangning outside?!

If she was out here... then who was inside?!

Princess Leyang spun back toward the prayer hall. The crowd, illuminated by the guards' lanterns, finally saw the scene clearly.

The prayer hall was in disarray—oil lamps and candlesticks scattered across the floor. Two naked figures were entangled on a table, their movements frantic, their bodies slick with sweat.

One of them was grunting with exertion, while the other lay face-down on the table, his eyes rolling back, his skin tinged with unnatural pallor.

Beside them, a woman lay unconscious, her body covered in bruises, her face half-hidden by disheveled hair. When the crowd recognized her, gasps erupted.

"That's the Fourth Prince's consort?!"

"How could it be her?!"

"And that's Sun Yi from Princess Leyang's household?!"

The two people were none other than Sun Yi, Princess Leyang's youngest son, and the Fourth Prince's consort.

"Ah—!"

The air was thick with the stench of sex. Sun Yi continued thrusting mindlessly, oblivious to the onlookers. The young women in the crowd, who had never witnessed such debauchery, covered their eyes, their faces burning with humiliation as they shrieked.

The others were equally horrified.

Princess Leyang paled in terror. "Yi'er?! No—it was supposed to be Song—"

"Song who?!"

Rong Yue stormed forward. When Princess Leyang's attendants moved to block her, Hang Li kicked them aside. Rong Yue seized the princess by the collar.

"You were going to say it was supposed to be my Tangning, weren't you? Before you even saw who was inside, you accused her of shamelessness. Since when did Princess Leyang gain the power of foresight?"

"Rong Yue, how dare you—"

Slap!

Rong Yue struck Princess Leyang hard across the face, leaving her dazed.

"You dare hit me—"

Slap!

Another brutal slap sent the princess stumbling. Before she could recover, Rong Yue kicked her squarely in the stomach.

Now she understood why Tangning had been acting strangely earlier—and why the Fourth Prince's consort had been so secretive. The moment Princess Leyang flung open the door and immediately hurled accusations, the truth became clear.

The thought that this woman had schemed to ruin Tangning's virtue—that it could have been Tangning lying there, humiliated—drove Rong Yue into a frenzy.

She yanked Princess Leyang's hair, dragging her down the steps, then rained more slaps across her face until blood trickled from the princess's lips.

"How dare you plot against my Tangning?! Who gave you the right to harm her?!"
