Zhu Shulan’s anger flared up, her face contorting slightly with frustration. Luo Jianguo’s voice took on a hint of suppressed anger as he said, “Hmph, do I need to rely on the Zhu family? If it weren’t for my hard work, would you be living a wealthy life now?” Luo Jianguo despised the idea of being seen as relying on his in-laws for his success.

Zhu Shulan sobbed, “If it weren’t for wanting to marry you and our love, I wouldn’t have severed ties with the Zhu family. Now you’re crossing the river and tearing down the bridge. Wuwuwu...” She began to cry uncontrollably.

Luo Qianqian, who had been feigning concern, said in a delicate tone, “Mom, stop crying. Seeing you so upset makes me sad too.” Internally, Luo Qianqian was getting frustrated with the tears; she rolled her eyes repeatedly but had to keep her composure.

After a moment, Luo Jianguo relented and spoke more gently, “I’ll transfer the money tomorrow. Just don’t gamble anymore.” Hearing this, Zhu Shulan was momentarily stunned, then stopped crying and looked overjoyed. “Really? Thank you, dear. I swear I’ll quit gambling.”

“Keep your promise,” Luo Jianguo said, then walked towards the bedroom.

Luo Qianqian breathed a sigh of relief. If Zhu Shulan and Luo Jianguo had argued, her own allowance might have been affected. She composed herself and said with a smile, “Mom, let’s pay off the debt as soon as we get the money tomorrow and quit gambling, okay?”

“Okay.” Zhu Shulan, with tear-streaked cheeks, seemed to have made a firm decision and nodded emphatically.

Gu Family Hospital.

Just like before, she and Gu Xiu were inside for a check-up while Mo Huai waited outside. “All indicators are normal. Have you felt any discomfort recently?” Gu Xiu asked with a professional smile, guiding the conversation gently.

Luo Wei thought for a moment and replied with a smile, “No.”

Gu Xiu glanced at Luo Wei, looking as if he had something more to say, his brows furrowing slightly.

Curious, Luo Wei asked, “Dr. Gu, is there something you want to say?”

Gu Xiu cleared his throat and spoke in a low, somber tone, “How have your emotions been since becoming pregnant? Have you had any episodes lately?” As Mo Huai’s brother, he felt obligated to be concerned for her well-being. Gu Xiu hoped for her quick recovery, understanding that such conditions couldn’t be rushed but wanting to assist her as much as he could.

Luo Wei became confused by his words. She furrowed her brows, “Dr. Gu, are you saying there’s something wrong with my baby?”

Her mood shifted abruptly, her heart sinking as if it missed a beat. Gu Xiu shook his head with a faint smile, “It’s not about the baby. Depression and anxiety can cause mood swings and episodes of distress. I understand the pain of these conditions.”

Gu Xiu continued, “But with Mo Huai by your side, I believe you’ll recover soon.”

Luo Wei’s heart sank further, realizing that he had known about her condition for some time. Why had he kept it from her?

Since living with Mo Huai, her emotions had been stable, and she hadn’t needed medication or experienced episodes. Luo Wei wondered if Mo Huai’s sudden confession was due to pity for her condition.

Feeling a bitter smile forming, Luo Wei thought perhaps Mo Huai’s confession was out of sympathy, but she didn’t need his pity.

With a heavy heart, she followed Gu Xiu out of the examination room.

Mo Huai, hearing the door open, stepped forward with a hint of a smile, “How was the check-up?” Luo Wei looked up at him, his gaze as bright as stars, and as always, he was anxious for the results. Luo Wei felt happy that he cared so much. She would usually show him the report, smiling and assuring him that everything was fine. This time, however, she only nodded and replied, “It’s nothing.”

Noticing her mood, Mo Huai glanced at Gu Xiu with a sharp look that exuded coldness. Gu Xiu, feeling the intensity of Mo Huai’s gaze, shivered and awkwardly smiled, “The check-up results are normal, hehe…”

“I need to do my rounds, so I’ll be going now,” Gu Xiu said, and quickly left.

Mo Huai’s expression turned serious, “What’s wrong? You don’t seem well. Is something bothering you? Please tell me.”

Luo Wei looked at him, feeling as though a heavy weight was pressing on her chest, making it hard to speak. She wanted to demand that he truly like her for who she is and not out of pity.

But she couldn’t bring herself to say it, feeling overwhelmed.

“It’s nothing. Let’s go,” Luo Wei said, forcing a smile.

Mo Huai didn’t press further. He didn’t want to push her into talking about something she wasn’t ready to discuss; instead, he aimed to gently guide her.

“Let’s go,” Mo Huai said, putting his arm around her shoulder as they left the Gu Family Hospital.

In the car, Luo Wei fell asleep without realizing it. She felt the car come to a stop and then was gently held by the tall man who smelled of sandalwood. The comforting scent made her sleep more soundly.

Mo Huai carefully laid her on the bed, adjusted the covers, and then a warm, moist touch brushed her forehead. In her semi-conscious state, she heard Mo Huai’s deep, soothing voice, “Promise me you’ll be happy every day.”

After saying this, Mo Huai quietly left the room and closed the door.

Luo Wei mumbled, her heart warmed, and fell back into a peaceful sleep.

Meanwhile, Mo Huai went to the living room, took out his phone, and called Gu Xiu. On the other end, Gu Xiu seemed to anticipate the call and, before Mo Huai could speak, recounted everything that happened in the examination room in detail. Gu Xiu talked for about five minutes, ending with Mo Huai’s terse “I understand” before hanging up.

Gu Xiu put down his phone, feeling relieved as he took a long breath. Fortunately, Mo Huai hadn’t “gone after him.”

Mo Huai put away his phone, his expression dark and emotionless.
