"Miss Gu, please take a seat," the waiter said politely, pulling out a chair. Gu Chuyi nodded with a smile and sat down.
The waiter soon brought two steaks and two glasses of red wine from 1982.
"Freshly prepared steak, give it a try. Would you like anything else?" Fu Chen's deep-set features were sharp, and his gaze sparkled.
"Mhm," Gu Chuyi nodded quietly, not daring to look at him.
Whenever she saw his alluring eyes, her mind would involuntarily conjure images of him, sweaty and making her happy in bed. Her face instantly flushed red.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Fu Chen asked gently, exchanging her uncut steak with his already sliced one.
She shook her head.
"Do you not want to see me?"
She nodded.
Realizing what she'd done, Gu Chuyi quickly looked up and explained, "No, I mean, it's just that I..."
Fu Chen’s eyes gleamed with amusement as he smiled lightly. "You didn’t have a good time last night?"
Gu Chuyi shot him a glare, stabbing a piece of steak with her fork and popping it into her mouth. After a long pause, she said, "I feel like our relationship is a bit unclear."
"It's not unclear at all," Fu Chen countered. "Aren’t we a couple now?"
Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Did you ever court me?"
"I gave you my first time. Isn’t that sincere enough?" Fu Chen grinned mischievously, saying such shameful things with a straight face.
Gu Chuyi clicked her tongue. She had given him her first time, too, but who could she tell? "Do you even like me?"
She put down her knife and fork, staring at him quietly, awaiting his answer.
After a few seconds, Fu Chen confidently said, "Yes."
She felt like she was struck by lightning, both inside and out. Her mouth opened and closed in shock. "Since when?"
"Love at first sight."
"The very first time?" Gu Chuyi was skeptical. How had she not noticed? Was she just too dense, or should she praise him for hiding it so well?
"Do you know why I became a celebrity?" Fu Chen elegantly took a sip of wine, glancing at her.
Gu Chuyi shook her head.
"Because of you."
Once again, she felt like she had been struck by lightning. "Why? Explain."
"Do you remember when we were in high school? You were obsessed with Jay Chou, like a little fangirl. Back then, I thought if I became a superstar, would you idolize me like you did Jay Chou? I miscalculated, though. After I became a star, you became distant. That really hurt."
Gu Chuyi thought for a moment. It did seem that way. Jay Chou's songs had accompanied her throughout high school, and after Fu Chen entered the entertainment industry, she thought he was already a superstar, admired by thousands, so she stopped hanging out with him as much.
"I'm sorry. I thought that once you became a star, a nobody like me wouldn’t be worthy of your time."
Gu Chuyi apologized softly. "So, are you confessing to me now?"
"What do you think?" Fu Chen gritted his teeth, glaring at her. "You're not going to deny everything after sleeping with me, are you?"
"Hey! What are you talking about? I'm very responsible!" Gu Chuyi rolled her eyes, but they both ended up laughing together.
“What are you two doing here?”
A familiar voice came from behind Gu Chuyi. She turned around and paused before flashing a fake smile. "Brother, what are you doing here?"
Gu Xiu walked up to them lazily, sitting down. "There was a seminar at the hospital, so I came over to eat afterward."
“Oh, I see,” Gu Chuyi responded.
“Why are you two together?” Gu Xiu frowned, looking at his sister’s lowered head and then at Fu Chen.
Fu Chen remained calm, smiling as he said, "I’m on a date with your sister..."
Before he could finish the word "date," Gu Chuyi jumped up and tightly covered Fu Chen's mouth. She quickly added, "My company is looking to hire Fu Chen for an ad, so I was sent to handle it."
Fu Chen raised an eyebrow, clearly puzzled by her explanation.
She nudged his shoulder, winking to silently tell him to keep quiet and not say anything unnecessary.
“What’s going on with you two?” Gu Xiu asked, watching her strange behavior, feeling a bit exasperated.
"We're having dinner to discuss the ad," Gu Chuyi said casually.
Gu Xiu didn’t press further, leaving with a simple, "Well, enjoy your meal. I’ve got more work at the hospital."
Gu Chuyi waved him off, feeling relieved inside. She thought, "Good, he’s leaving," but outwardly said, "That’s too bad. Alright, see you later. We’ll head out after eating. Bye-bye."
Watching her brother walk away, Gu Chuyi finally breathed a sigh of relief. She looked up to see Fu Chen’s face, shadowed with irritation.
"Why are you hiding it from your brother? Is our relationship something to be ashamed of?" Fu Chen asked, enunciating each word through gritted teeth.
She massaged her temples. If her brother or Mo Huai found out about her sudden relationship with Fu Chen, it would be incredibly embarrassing.
“I... I’m just shy,” Gu Chuyi stammered, coming up with an excuse that Fu Chen clearly didn’t believe.
“Shy? Or do you think I’m not good enough for you?”
Fu Chen puffed out his chest like a child throwing a tantrum for not getting candy.
Gu Chuyi was at her wit's end.
After a long round of explanations and coaxing, Fu Chen finally believed her—barely—that she was just shy and not ashamed of him.
She needed to find the right moment to make their relationship public, not blurt it out now. If Fu Chen's fans found out she was his girlfriend, they’d probably tear her apart.
The thought gave Gu Chuyi chills and made her break out in goosebumps.
“Hand over your phone.”
Fu Chen’s raspy voice cut through her thoughts. Surprised, she obediently passed him her phone.
After a few minutes of tinkering, Fu Chen smirked triumphantly and handed it back. “Here.”
Curious, Gu Chuyi unlocked her phone to see what he had done. In a flash, she was frozen in shock.
Her phone's wallpaper had been changed to a picture of her and Fu Chen in bed!
She was sound asleep, her cheeks still flushed, lying in Fu Chen’s arms while he held the phone, grinning smugly for a selfie.
That expression on his face was way too smug.
Fire lit up in her eyes as she cursed under her breath. "Ah! What the hell are you doing? What if someone sees this?! My reputation!"
Fu Chen lifted his head, snapping his fingers leisurely. "So what? Seeing my bed selfie would be an honor for them. It’s their good fortune to witness it."
Gu Chuyi gritted her teeth in frustration. She had met narcissists before, but never one this extreme.
“What’s going on?!” She tried to change the wallpaper back, but nothing worked, leaving her at her wits' end.
“You can stop trying,” Fu Chen said in a triumphant tone. “I’ve locked it. You can’t change it.”
Gu Chuyi wanted to strangle him, but after a brief struggle, she gave up and shot him a furious glare.
Fu Chen, watching her cute little outburst, felt a jolt of warmth run through him, sending tingles down his spine.
