On the way back, Gu Chu was restless. After thinking about it, she realized that she couldn't be so selfish. For Fu Chen's future, she could only sacrifice herself.
She made a silent, selfish decision in her heart: she would not see Fu Chen again until he finished filming, to avoid being secretly photographed by paparazzi and prevent Fu Chen from paying a hefty breach of contract fee.
In the days that followed, Gu Chu ignored all of Fu Chen’s calls and WeChat messages. He called again and again, and she heartlessly hung up every time. The messages he sent were varied:
【Baby, I miss you so much!】
【Not replying? Don’t you miss me?】
【I'll count to three. If you don't answer me, I'll disappear forever, and you'll lose your boyfriend.】
【Three】
【Two】
【One】
…
Looking at the flood of texts from Fu Chen, Gu Chu felt heartbroken. She gritted her teeth and turned off her phone, throwing it aside, deciding that out of sight was out of mind.
Fu Chen had once gone to her company to find her. Gu Chu had already given advance notice that if he came, they should tell him she was on a business trip and make up an excuse to send him away. Gu Chu secretly hid by the back door and watched the hint of loneliness flash in Fu Chen's eyes. She wanted nothing more than to rush out, embrace him, and tell him how much she loved him.
Gu Chu’s face was so grim that it could drip water.
She thought to herself, Fu Chen must be feeling confused right now, not understanding why she was suddenly avoiding him. If she told him that his manager had come to see her, Fu Chen would definitely quit the industry immediately and elope with her without caring about the consequences, but she couldn’t be that selfish.
Gu Chu sighed heavily.
At Bosch Manor.
Luo Wei gave her a deep look. Gu Chu had come to help her redesign her wedding dress today. "What’s wrong with you, grandma? I've heard you sigh dozens of times since this morning."
"Ugh," Gu Chu shook her head, looking conflicted. "Weiwei, don’t you think it would be great if lovesickness didn’t exist?"
"Lovesickness?"
The corner of Luo Wei's mouth twitched. She thought Gu Chu was acting strangely and, feeling curious, walked over, took her hand, and asked, "What’s going on?"
Gu Chu coughed lightly and then slowly recounted the story of meeting with his manager at MB Café.
"Oh," Luo Wei responded after hearing the story, drawing out the word with a long tail, raising her head and rubbing her chin. "So that's what happened. But you're being too harsh on Fu Chen. He must be really upset."
A trace of sorrow flashed through Gu Chu's eyes, and she sat down on the sofa, dejected. "Of course, I know that, but there’s no other way. If Fu Chen finds out, he’ll definitely breach his contract, fall out with his manager, and might even leave the industry entirely. I don’t want to be the stumbling block in his career."
Luo Wei sat beside her and patted her on the shoulder. "Can you endure this for a few months? Lovesickness isn’t easy to bear, you know."
Gu Chu remained silent for a while, then firmly nodded and made a cheering gesture. "It’ll be fine. It's only a few months. It’ll pass quickly."
Luo Wei shook her head, feeling a bit bitter inside. Her relationship with Mo Huai had its share of drama, but at least it ended in happiness.
In her heart, Luo Wei hoped that her best friend could also overcome her hardships, that she and Fu Chen would have a happy ending, and that lovers would finally be together.
At the Chi residence.
“Lili, eat more. I had the maid make your favorite steamed bass.” Mother Chi smiled as she placed food on Lili’s plate.
Lili smiled sweetly and shyly said, “Thank you, Auntie.”
Father Chi was very satisfied with Lili as a future daughter-in-law. Although Mother Chi didn’t like her, she maintained proper manners, feeling that Lili, compared to Luo Wei, still fell short. Lili seemed a bit sly and calculating, not as genuinely kind.
“Ah Yu, it’s time to move forward with your marriage to Lili. What do you think?” Father Chi glanced at Chi Yu and said sternly.
Chi Yu paused, put down his chopsticks, his gaze dark and deep. “Let’s talk about it later.”
“A man won’t grow up until he settles down. I’m very satisfied with Lili. I think you should proceed with the marriage quickly. What do you think, Lili?” Father Chi's gaze was sharp as he turned toward Lili.
Upon hearing this, Lili blushed slightly and shyly smiled, “I’ll listen to whatever Uncle decides.”
Chi Yu felt impatient. He hated when others made decisions for him. His relationship with Lili had been arranged by Father Chi, and now marriage was being decided the same way. He had already missed out on Luo Wei, and he didn’t want to rush into another marriage. Emotions needed to progress gradually, there had to be a process.
Chi Yu’s expression was indifferent as he said coldly, "Dad, let me think about it."
Father Chi was about to lose his temper, but Mother Chi quickly intervened, calming the situation. "The boy is old enough to make his own decisions. Stop being so stubborn. Xiao Yu will think it through. Don't worry."
“Xiao Yu, eat more. Lili, don’t take it to heart. That's just how father and son are. Eat up.”
Lili forced a smile, feeling bitter inside. Although she liked Chi Yu very much, her sixth sense told her that Chi Yu still had another woman in his heart. No matter how hard she tried during this time, she couldn’t break into his inner world.
After dinner, Chi Yu took Lili home. As soon as he returned, Mother Chi called out to him.
“Mom, what is it?” Chi Yu paused, a hint of coldness in his eyes.
“Xiao Yu, come sit. Mom has something to talk to you about.” Mother Chi patted the sofa, motioning for him to sit down.
Chi Yu sat, his gaze fixed on her.
"Xiao Yu, you and Lili have been dating for a few months now. Tell me the truth. How do you feel about her?"
Chi Yu was silent for a few seconds, then replied indifferently, "She's alright."
"Really?" Mother Chi didn’t seem convinced. Sighing, she continued, “I know you’re only dating her because of your father and me, but I want you to find happiness. Do you really love Lili?”
Chi Yu stayed silent, offering no answer.
Mother Chi glanced at him, sighed, and after a long pause, said, “Still can’t forget about Weiwei?”
Chi Yu’s body tensed, his entire frame rigid. Hearing that name still caused a pang in his heart.
His expression said it all. Mother Chi shook her head in resignation and said softly, “Xiao Yu, you’re a smart boy. You should know that Weiwei is already married with a child. There’s no going back. Her wedding is in two months.”
Chi Yu was stunned, surprised. “Weiwei’s getting married?”
"Yes, she's been preparing for the wedding photos recently. I often see her updates on social media. She seems much happier now than before. You need to move on."
Chi Yu’s breath hitched, his eyes dark and brooding. The air around him seemed to drop several degrees.
After finishing, Mother Chi went to her room, leaving Chi Yu alone in the large living room. The light cast a cold glow on his face.
Luo Wei had once carefully followed him, her only dream to marry him. But now, things had turned out completely different.
Chi Yu stood up and walked toward his room on the second floor, his back carrying a sense of loneliness. Could he really let go of Luo Wei in this lifetime?
He chuckled bitterly.
